Guilford County Adjusts Parking Requirements to Encourage Housing Development
In a move aimed at promoting residential development, Guilford County has revised its parking regulations for multi-family housing and townhomes. The previous standard, which often mandated nearly two parking spaces per unit along with extra spaces for guests, has been overhauled.
During a recent meeting, the Guilford County Board of Commissioners unanimously passed an amendment to the Unified Development Ordinance. This amendment introduces a more adaptable parking requirement system that varies with the number of bedrooms in a unit. For units with three or more bedrooms, two parking spaces remain necessary. However, residences with a single bedroom now require only 1.25 parking spots, while those with two bedrooms need 1.5 spots.
County officials anticipate that these changes will facilitate greater development opportunities. Additionally, the board decided to eliminate the restriction on the number of times developers can refile rezoning requests for the same property.
