CDC Halts Several Diagnostic Tests Amid Staffing Reductions
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has temporarily suspended over twenty diagnostic tests, impacting assessments for diseases such as rabies, monkeypox, and Epstein-Barr virus. This decision comes as the organization faces significant staffing challenges.
Andrew Nixon from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, which manages the CDC, expressed optimism that some of the halted tests might resume soon. He emphasized that the CDC is committed to collaborating with state and local entities to maintain public health testing capabilities.
The suspension of these tests may be a consequence of the CDC’s recent workforce reduction. Reports suggest a 20% to 25% decrease in staffing, attributed to various factors including layoffs, retirements, resignations, and the non-renewal of temporary positions.
