Georgia unemployment holds at 3.5% as labor force and job levels reach record highs

Georgia’s Steady Job Market Surpasses National Unemployment Trends

In January 2026, Georgia’s unemployment rate remained unchanged at 3.5%, continuing to outperform the national average by 0.8 percentage points. This rate shows a slight increase from the 3.4% recorded in the same month last year.

The state’s economy has shown resilience with a monthly job increase of 1,200, bringing the total to nearly 5 million jobs. Over the past 12 months, Georgia’s job market expanded by 9,300 positions, indicating a positive trend following the declines experienced at the end of 2025.

Significant employment milestones were achieved in the construction and health care and social assistance sectors, which reached record levels at 237,500 and 636,000 jobs, respectively. Retail trade and transportation sectors also experienced considerable monthly growth, whereas administrative services and manufacturing saw reductions.

Georgia’s labor force hit a new peak of 5.45 million, an increase of over 32,000 compared to the previous year. Employment numbers also climbed to a historic high of 5.25 million. Although initial unemployment claims rose in January, they were still much lower than figures from the previous year.
