Winter Weather and Wind Alerts Impacting Sierra and Western Nevada
Residents in the Sierra region and surrounding areas are advised to prepare for significant weather changes as a winter weather advisory remains active until tomorrow. Areas above 7000 feet can expect snow accumulation ranging from 6 to 12 inches, while the Sierra communities could see 1 to 4 inches of snow. Snow levels are predicted to descend to valley elevations, with potential accumulations of 1 to 3 inches. Travelers should anticipate considerable delays over the pass and the implementation of chain controls.
In Reno, today’s temperatures are forecasted to reach a high of about 56 degrees, with overnight lows dropping to 35 degrees. Wind conditions are a major concern across western Nevada, as a wind advisory is in place with gusts potentially reaching up to 50 mph. Both Lake Tahoe and Pyramid Lake are anticipated to experience wave heights between 1 to 5 feet.
Starting from 2 p.m. today and lasting until 11 a.m. tomorrow, a high wind warning will be enforced for the Reno-Carson City area, Mono County, and Northeastern California. Winds are expected to be damaging, ranging between 30 to 40 mph, with gusts in the valley reaching up to 60 mph and exceeding 80 mph in areas prone to high winds. Residents are encouraged to secure any loose items and to prepare for possible power outages.
