At 33, Kaedi Cecala faced a serious health challenge. Diagnosed with myelodysplastic syndrome in 2020, her bone marrow was failing to produce necessary blood cells. A stem cell transplant was her only chance at recovery.
The search for a suitable donor often takes years, but Cecala’s case was different. Within two months of joining the transplant registry in August 2021, she was informed of a perfect match.
“It was a young man from somewhere in Europe, and that is all I knew,” Cecala told People. “Who was this literal angel that would take the time out of his life to do something like this?”
Cecala was deeply moved that a person she had never met and who received no compensation chose to save her life.
“My immediate reaction, truthfully, was shock and just an overwhelming amount of gratitude,” she said.
The selfless donor was Karol Zwierzinski, a 25-year-old from Poland. Upon learning he was a match, he agreed to donate his stem cells without hesitation.
Following the procedure, both only knew scant details about each other. Zwierzinski was aware that his donation aided a woman in her 30s residing in the United States.
“I was shocked that someone living so far away could have DNA so similar to mine,” he said. “At the same time, I was deeply moved and full of hope that my stem cells would engraft successfully and help her return to health.”
After the donation, all that was left was to wait.
Once the waiting period ended, Cecala was eager to connect with her donor. Zwierzinski reached out in March 2025, initiating a bond that had already profoundly impacted their lives.
As their friendship grew, Cecala asked if he would attend her wedding.
He accepted the invitation.
@nichebeauty.bykaedi Part 2. This is Karol. He donated his stem cells to a stranger in the US, so that I could have a future. Him and his beautiful wife Dominika flew in from their home in Poland to meet face to face for the first time at our wedding. We were able to pull off the most special and epic surprise for our guests. Because of him, I’m here. Because of him, I got married. Because of him, I get to live this life. The man who gave me my life… stood in the same room where we celebrated it. Gratitude doesn’t begin to cover this kind of gift The last piece will be announced tomorrow. In December 2025, Zwierzinski and his wife traveled to the US to participate in the wedding festivities. The joyous occasion, captured in a viral video, quickly amassed over a million views online.
Addressing the wedding guests, Zwierzinski shared a heartfelt message encouraging others to consider becoming donors.
“Somewhere out there your Kaedi may still be waiting,” he said.
Now in remission, Cecala’s journey highlights how an act of kindness from a stranger can transform a life.
