During a Hartford Wolf Pack hockey match earlier this month, the team mascot aimed a T-shirt at a girl and her brother. However, the shirt bounced off a wall and landed with another child, changing the anticipated cheer into dismay.
Officer Christopher Vanwey, who was on duty at the event, observed the situation and decided to intervene. He surprised the young girl with a hockey toy and a soccer ball, instantly lifting her spirits and transforming her experience.
This small gesture held significant value for the family, underscoring a lesson in compassion and illustrating the positive influence of police officers within the community.

In a letter addressed to the Hartford Police Department, the girl’s mother expressed her gratitude, mentioning how the act “made my daughter’s day.” She wrote, “I hope this card can get to the police officer. Thanks for all you do each and every day to protect us all. Thanks for teaching my children about kindness. A very appreciative mom, Leah.”
The daughter, Bella, also penned her appreciation:
“You are very thoughtful. Thank you for the hockey toy and the soccer ball. I hope you have a good day. – Bella.”
The Hartford Police Department shared this touching story, highlighting their core mission:
“This is what policing is about—showing up, paying attention, and making a difference when it matters most.”
