Beware of Fake Traffic Violation Text Scam, Warn NC Officials

Officials warn residents about fake traffic violation texts

Residents Alerted to Text-Message Scam Impersonating Traffic Violation Notices

Authorities are cautioning the public about a new text-message scam that falsely claims recipients have unpaid traffic fines. The scam message is cleverly crafted to resemble an official communication from Wake County District Court, complete with a North Carolina state seal.

The North Carolina Judicial Branch has confirmed the fraudulent nature of these messages. According to officials, legitimate court or law enforcement agencies will never reach out via text or email to demand Social Security numbers, credit card details, or any form of payment.

Even if a text contains your personal information or names of actual judges or officers, it is crucial to remain skeptical. The authenticity of such messages is highly questionable.

Officials strongly recommend that individuals avoid clicking on any links or scanning QR codes in these messages. Instead, they should report the message as spam and directly contact the local clerk of court to confirm whether any traffic tickets are pending.
