Governor Whitmer Advocates for Increased Pre-K and Literacy Funding

Whitmer urges more funding for early childhood education

Governor Whitmer Advocates for Increased Investment in Early Education

Governor Gretchen Whitmer took a hands-on approach to advocating for early education on Wednesday, spending time with young children at a Saginaw early childhood center. Her visit highlights a push for increased state investment in Pre-K and literacy programs.

The governor has proposed a significant budget for Fiscal Year 2027, allocating $181 million to expand the “Pre-K for All” initiative. This program is aimed at providing free pre-school education to 4-year-olds, setting a solid foundation for their educational journey.

In addition to Pre-K funding, Whitmer’s budget plan includes a substantial $625 million dedicated to literacy programs. These funds are intended to bolster early education, employing proven strategies such as enhanced training for educators in evidence-based reading methods and increased literacy coaching. The goal is to provide extra support for students who need it most.

Whitmer expressed optimism about the progress made in literacy education, stating, “We’ve done great work together already with the Science of Reading.” This comment refers to the literacy legislation passed in 2024, and she views these budget proposals as the next step toward achieving desired educational outcomes.

The governor is hopeful that her proposals will garner bipartisan support, translating into the necessary funding to realize these ambitious educational goals.
