Cedar Shoals High School Honors Late Coach James Holston with Dedication Ceremony

In a heartfelt tribute to an esteemed educator and coach, Cedar Shoals High School will dedicate its baseball field in honor of the late James Holston. The dedication ceremony is scheduled for Wednesday, April 1st, at 5 p.m., right before the Jaguars’ home baseball game.

James Holston (1935-2017) served as Cedar Shoals High School’s inaugural baseball coach and was a valued member of the science department. His career spanned 34 years within Clarke County high schools, with his tenure at Cedar Shoals lasting from 1972 until his retirement in 1994. Recognized for his contributions to athletics, Holston was inducted into the Athens Athletic Hall of Fame in 2005 and was among the first inductees into the Cedar Shoals Athletic Hall of Fame in 2017.

The decision to rename the baseball field was approved by the Clarke County Board of Education in 2025. This decision followed a concerted public effort led by Rev. Lamar Sandoval and Anthony Pittman, who worked closely with Holston. They highlighted the profound impact Holston had on the community, championing the cause to honor his legacy.
