In Martin, Michigan, a nine-year-old boy named Logan Vangemert, who is in the fourth grade, is being praised for his heroics after saving a man’s life mere hours after being taught CPR.
Logan and Tom
During a church service in Richland, a leader named Tom suddenly suffered a cardiac arrest. Panic ensued among the adults present, but Logan sprang into action without a second thought.
“I did CPR on him,” Logan recounted while showing the chest compressions he performed.
Remarkably, Logan had been introduced to hands-only CPR at school less than a day before the incident. His timely response was crucial in the critical minutes before an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) was used to restart Tom’s heart. Following surgery and the installation of a pacemaker, Tom has fully recovered.
Logan feels he was guided by a higher power at that moment.
“I heard a voice in my head telling me to go, so I sprinted over there,” he remembered. “Then it said some pretty good things about me.”
The community has recognized his courage.
In a ceremony at Martin High School, an auditorium filled with students and teachers applauded as Logan was awarded for his lifesaving actions. He also received recognition from local authorities and the American Heart Association.
Logan’s mother expressed immense pride. “I am beyond proud of him for stepping up and doing something extremely difficult—even for an adult,” she said.
Looking ahead, Logan aspires to a future in medicine, a fitting goal for the young hero.
