A seemingly ordinary meal delivery turned into a life-saving mission for a young volunteer in Fort Worth.

While conducting his regular deliveries for Meals on Wheels, 19-year-old Alekzander Dzivak encountered an urgent situation that demanded swift action.
Inside the home was Ms. Lana, an elderly woman facing a severe diabetic crisis, having collapsed and been unable to move. Fortunately, her phone lay nearby. The alert from her doorbell camera app signaled Dzivak’s arrival, prompting her to reach out for assistance. In her disoriented state, calling 911 had not occurred to her.
Communicating through the doorbell, she implored him for help. “She was giving me the code and saying she was gonna die, and please call 911,” Dzivak recounted.
Dzivak immediately contacted emergency services and remained virtually by her side, offering reassurance and keeping her calm until aid arrived.
“I was nodding and shaking my head. I was trying to keep her talking to me, keep her calm,” he shared. “It was a very scary situation.”

Paramedics arrived in under five minutes and were able to stabilize Ms. Lana’s condition.
For Ms. Lana, the timing of Dzivak’s arrival was not just fortunate—it was vital. “If he hadn’t come, I would’ve died. It was that far along,” she expressed. “He came to the door at the right moment. It’s just unbelievable.”
Reflecting on the situation, she recounted her fear of isolation. “I was petrified because I’ve never been that bad before. I knew I was by myself… there just wasn’t any way I could get hold of anybody.”
At just 19, Dzivak is one of the youngest to volunteer for Meals on Wheels in Tarrant County, managing two delivery routes weekly. But this particular delivery transcended its usual purpose.
“I was very happy I arrived when I did, because I don’t know what would’ve happened had I shown up later,” he noted. “So I’m just glad I was here, and the paramedics were as close as they were.”
The incident has forged a special connection between Dzivak and Ms. Lana, far exceeding a mere delivery relationship.
For Dzivak, the experience has enhanced the value he places on volunteering. “Any impact you’re able to make is amazing,” he emphasized. “I find it so rewarding to volunteer.”
