Greensboro Launches New Housing Project for Homeless Assistance

Greensboro considers new programs to tackle homelessness

Greensboro’s New Housing Initiative Aims to Address Homelessness

In a significant shift from its current strategy, Greensboro is preparing to introduce a housing project targeting those without homes. This new approach is set to replace the city’s pallet shelter program, which is scheduled to conclude in the summer.

The initiative will channel resources into two experimental programs. One, named Small Family Housing, is designed to transition ten families living in vehicles into leased housing. The other, termed Housing First Plus, aims to offer comprehensive support to twenty individuals with high needs.

During a recent work session, City Council member Crystal Black suggested that issuing municipal IDs to service users could improve tracking of the program’s outcomes. “If we can move our unhoused population into housing, I would want to know what that success is and what that data looks like,” Black commented.

City officials have projected that these pilot programs could lead to annual savings of over $200,000 for Greensboro. The city council is anticipated to discuss funding for these initiatives at its upcoming meeting in April.
