Georgia Senate Votes to Suspend Gas Tax, Awaits Governor’s Approval

Georgia Senate approves 60 day gas tax suspension

Georgia Senate Moves to Ease Fuel Costs with Gas Tax Suspension

The prospect of cheaper gasoline in Georgia is gaining traction as state lawmakers take decisive action to ease the financial burden on drivers. Following the House’s approval, the Georgia State Senate has voted in favor of suspending the gas tax, signaling a potential relief for motorists.

During a session on Thursday, Senator Chuck Hufstetler emphasized the importance of addressing affordability issues. “We’re certainly mindful of persistent affordability concerns, and are using every tool at our disposal, including tax rebates, property tax help,” he said. “Everything we can to help out everyday Georgians.”

The legislative body has amended House Bill 1199 to halt the collection of the motor fuel tax for a period of 60 days. Currently, Georgia imposes a 33 cents per gallon tax on gas and a 37 cents per gallon tax on diesel. Senator Nikki Merritt, a proponent of the suspension, expressed gratitude for the bipartisan support of the measure.

“I just want to say that I appreciate my colleagues today considering suspending the gas tax,” Merritt stated. “It was a request and it really is not a partisan issue, it was just, we could provide relief for Georgians. So I want to thank you. I want to thank the House for bringing the bill forward, and I want to thank you all for the support and it’s a win for our constituents and will hopefully give the much-needed relief as we get through this time.”

The Senate’s decision was reached unanimously, and the proposal now awaits the signature of Governor Brian Kemp. The governor previously suspended the gas tax in 2024 following the devastation caused by Hurricane Helene.
