Allegations Against Cesar Chavez Spark Reactions Across Organizations
Recent allegations against the late Cesar Chavez, a renowned farm labor leader and co-founder of the United Farm Workers (UFW), have prompted swift actions from various organizations to reassess their associations with him.
The Northern Nevada Central Labor Council has decided to rename its annual event, previously known as the Cesar Chavez Celebration dinner, to the Solidarity Celebration dinner. Rob Bennet, Secretary-Treasurer of the council, stated, “Out of respect for the United Farm Workers and in solidarity with anyone who may have been harmed, we felt it was important to rename this event.”
At the University of Nevada, Reno, the situation has led to a reevaluation of their Cesar Chavez Day of Service. This event was traditionally organized with involvement from the Latino Research Center and the Multicultural Center. The University commented, “The allegations that have recently been raised regarding Cesar Chavez are concerning claims. While we are unaware of any future events on campus honoring Cesar Chavez, we will take all relevant information into consideration as we plan future events and programming.”
The allegations, reported by The New York Times, include claims of sexual misconduct by Chavez with girls as young as 13. Additionally, UFW co-founder Dolores Huerta has publicly shared that she was sexually assaulted by Chavez on two occasions.
