Mount Olive mayor retains title, but almost no power, after unanimous board vote

Mount Olive Mayor Stripped of Powers Amid Controversy

In a move that has shaken the small town of Mount Olive, the governing body has effectively neutralized the mayor’s authority, leaving him with a title but little power. This decision followed a unanimous vote by the Board of Commissioners late on Thursday.

The resolution severely limits Mayor Jerome Newton’s role, prohibiting him from signing checks, negotiating contracts, or managing town staff. Additionally, he is restricted from general access to the Town Hall, with allowances only for morning visits at the Town Hall Annex.

Commissioners argue that Newton’s actions overstepped his authority, causing harm to the town. This decision emerged from an almost 90-minute closed-door session, which has drawn criticism from legal experts who suggest it might have breached state open meetings laws.

As Mount Olive’s first Black mayor, Newton has previously alleged that the board is conspiring against him. With his powers curtailed, his responsibilities are now largely ceremonial, focusing on presiding over meetings.
