The chain of events began when Brittany Smith, residing in Manchester, Tennessee, noticed an unusual scene on her Ring doorbell footage. Initially, she was displeased with her daughter’s father for ordering Starbucks delivery once more, a luxury they typically reserve for special occasions.

“So I see the Ring doorbell go off, and I’m like, you’ve got to be kidding me, he had Starbucks sent again,” Smith recalled.

However, her annoyance turned into concern upon viewing the footage. The short clip captured an elderly man, cautiously ascending her steps to deliver the drink, struggling as he did so.

“This poor guy is struggling to get up my stairs to deliver my very capable daughter her Starbucks,” Smith noted.

The delivery driver, 78-year-old Richard, has been working for DoorDash alongside his wife Brenda due to financial necessity, particularly because of Brenda’s medical expenses that include crucial kidney disease medication.

Richard began delivering to help make ends meet after Brenda lost her job. “I had a job and just losing that we had to supplement it. So I started running for DoorDash,” he explained.

After witnessing the video, Smith attempted to increase Richard’s tip through the app but was unsuccessful. Turning to social media, she posted the clip, hoping it would reach someone who knew Richard.

The post quickly gained traction, amassing over 2.3 million views. An individual familiar with Richard from regular deliveries helped identify him, allowing Smith to visit him at home and offer a $200 tip.

Before accepting, Richard showed his humble nature by confirming, “He wanted to make sure that I was going to be OK if he accepted that money from me,” Smith said.

Motivated to do more, Smith created a GoFundMe campaign titled “Give Richard a Chance to Rest Again.” The outpouring of support was beyond her expectations.

In a short span, donations surpassed the half-million-dollar mark with contributions from over 12,000 people, leaving Richard and Brenda overwhelmingly grateful.

“It’s just really difficult to believe that there’s that many people that are that generous to try to help us… people that don’t even know us,” Richard expressed.

The unexpected attention has been astonishing for Smith as well, who stated, “I’m floored,” and affirmed she would “do it over again in a heartbeat.”

Thanks to the generous donations, Richard and Brenda are now looking at the prospect of easing their workload, something they haven’t been able to do for years. Richard, overwhelmed by the kindness, has been vigilantly monitoring the fundraiser’s progress.

“Richard said he’s not slept in two days because he can’t quit watching the GoFundMe,” Smith added.
