Nevada Extends SNAP Waiver for 43,000 Able-Bodied Adults Until May

Nevada urges SNAP recipients to meet work requirements before May 1

In a significant development affecting numerous individuals, Nevada has temporarily waived work requirements for able-bodied adults without dependents receiving SNAP benefits until May 1. This decision impacts nearly 43,000 people across the state.

Kelly Cantrelle, deputy administrator of the Division of Social Services, highlighted the challenges some recipients face in meeting these requirements. “It could be something as simple as they don’t have transportation. They can’t afford to pay for childcare,” Cantrelle explained. “We are always concerned with food access. How do you keep people fed? SNAP benefits are the number one way that that happens in the country. So when folks really do start falling off because they’re unable to cooperate, the food banks are going to be the next resource.”

For 15 years, Nevada has benefited from a federal waiver due to its high unemployment rates. However, the exemption now only applies to Mineral County and tribal reservations, where unemployment remains above 10%.

To comply with the requirements, individuals have several options, including employment, volunteering, or education, encompassing vocational training. Cantrelle encourages those in need to contact the office for assistance.
