Nebraska men’s basketball drops rematch with Purdue in Big Ten Tournament

The Nebraska Cornhuskers faced a tough challenge against the Purdue Boilermakers in their Big Ten Tournament quarterfinal clash, resulting in a 74-58 defeat. Purdue, the No. 7 seed, maintained control throughout the game, leaving Nebraska, the No. 2 seed, with a 26-6 record as they head into March Madness. Meanwhile, Purdue improved their season to 25-8.

Purdue came out strong offensively, capitalizing on Nebraska’s early turnovers. In the first half alone, Purdue forced eight turnovers and converted them into 17 points, while Nebraska failed to score off any turnovers by Purdue.

Replicating their strategy from their previous game against Nebraska, the Boilermakers quickly established a lead. A series of successful three-point shots gave Purdue a 13-3 advantage, prompting Nebraska to call a timeout.

After the timeout, Nebraska attempted a comeback with a three-pointer from Rienk Mast and a mid-range shot from Pryce Sandfort, narrowing the gap to 13-8 in favor of Purdue.

Despite Nebraska’s effort, Purdue responded with a 12-3 run, maintaining their shooting efficiency at 60% with 12 of 20 field goals made. A disputed foul call on Nebraska’s head coach, Fred Hoiberg, during a three-point attempt by Purdue’s C.J. Cox extended Purdue’s lead to 33-22.

Purdue’s defensive intensity continued, and Fletcher Loyer contributed with his third three-pointer of the first half, following a Nebraska turnover. At halftime, Purdue led 41-28, with Sandfort leading Nebraska’s scoring with 10 points, and Loyer leading Purdue with 13 points. Braden Smith, a three-time all-Big Ten point guard, provided seven assists for Purdue by halftime. Notably, both teams were evenly matched in rebounds, a contrast to their previous encounter.

The second half began with Nebraska’s Jamarques Lawrence making a jumper, but Purdue quickly regained momentum. A three from Smith and a layup by Trey Kaufman-Renn extended the lead to 48-30.

Nebraska managed to create some defensive stops and improved their offense with Sandfort and Mast hitting consecutive threes, reducing the deficit to 51-41 and causing Purdue to call a timeout with under 12 minutes remaining.

Post-timeout, Purdue regained their rhythm with a three-pointer from Gicarri Harris following an offensive rebound by Kaufman-Renn, setting the score at 54-41 with 11:59 left on the clock.

Sam Hoiberg chipped in with a three-pointer to bring Nebraska within eight points at 56-48, but that was as close as they would get. Purdue continued to exploit offensive rebounds and successful three-point shots, increasing their lead to 72-52 before the final media timeout.

Purdue’s second-half performance was bolstered by eight offensive rebounds and 13 second-chance points. Sandfort led Nebraska with 15 points, while Mast added 11. Purdue’s Loyer topped all scorers with 19 points, with Cox and Oscar Cluff contributing 12 each.

Purdue will move on to face either Michigan State or UCLA in the semifinals. Nebraska awaits its fate during the March Madness Selection Show, scheduled for 5 p.m. CT on Sunday.
