Nebraska Unveils New Driver’s License and ID Card Designs with Enhanced Security

In an effort to bolster identity protection and celebrate state heritage, the Nebraska Department of Motor Vehicles has introduced a revamped design for driver’s licenses and state identification cards. This fresh look, revealed on Monday, is set to feature Nebraska-themed imagery alongside advanced security measures.

The newly designed cards will showcase a black-and-white photo format aimed at improving the identification process. According to a press release from the department, these monochrome images enhance the ability to distinguish facial features, thereby assisting law enforcement and businesses in verifying identities more effectively.

These new IDs are equipped with state-of-the-art anti-counterfeiting technology, refined microprinting, and various embedded security elements. The aim is to prevent identity fraud and ensure the safety of Nebraska residents.

The design incorporates iconic Nebraska imagery, including the Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge in Omaha, cattle on the prairie, wheat fields, the state insect—the honeybee—and the picturesque Wildcat Hills in western Nebraska.

“These new driver licenses and state ID cards celebrate the people, industry, and landscapes that define Nebraska, while integrating the most up-to-date security features available,” stated Rhonda Lahm, Director of the Nebraska DMV. “The addition of monochrome photographs and enhanced security features further strengthens our ability to protect Nebraskans’ identities.”

Beginning this month, the Nebraska DMV will roll out the new licenses and ID cards, with all licensing locations across the state expected to issue them by mid-April. Existing credentials will remain valid until their printed expiration dates, and residents are not required to replace them prematurely.

Cheryl Porter, Administrator of the Driver Licensing Services Division, clarified in the press release, “Cards with the previous design will continue to be valid for all official purposes until they reach their expiration date. Customers should renew or replace their credential only when they are otherwise required to do so.”
