New Appointment to North Carolina State Board of Elections
A significant change has occurred within the North Carolina State Board of Elections following the sudden departure of Republican Bob Rucho. This unexpected resignation has paved the way for Angela Hawkins to step into the role as the newest board member.
Rucho’s resignation came after less than a year of service, and it appears to be linked to recent political contributions, as reported by WRAL-TV. State regulations strictly prohibit board members from engaging in campaign donations, which Rucho reportedly breached by contributing approximately $1,300 to the campaigns of Catawba County Sheriff Don Brown and Iredell County Sheriff Darren Campbell.
The transition was acknowledged by State Auditor Dave Boliek, who expressed gratitude for Rucho’s time on the board. Boliek highlighted Rucho’s contributions to maintaining election integrity and his efforts to ensure the voting process remains both accessible and secure, stating that he “led on election integrity and helped make it easy to vote and hard to cheat” in North Carolina’s elections.
