Heartfelt Adoption: Doctor’s Bond With Lone Child Sparks Family Reunions
March 7, 2026
Dr. Amy Beethe, a pediatric anesthesiologist at Children’s Nebraska, found herself moved by the sight of a young boy facing heart surgery without anyone by his side. This pivotal moment led her to adopt the child and subsequently aid in finding homes for his five siblings.

True, at only four years old, was preparing for surgery when Dr. Beethe encountered him. His condition, hypoplastic right heart syndrome (HRHS), required serious medical attention. Despite the daunting situation, True exhibited a lively personality, even playing a small prank on Dr. Beethe before his operation.
Reflecting on the moment, Dr. Beethe said, “He was sitting there all alone. It took me back that this 4-year-old was going to go through heart surgery, and nobody was there.” (source)
Transformative Family Decisions
After True’s surgery, Dr. Beethe discussed with her husband, Ryan, the idea of welcoming True into their family. Ryan was open to the idea from the start, and after meeting True, the decision to adopt him became clear.
“We went up and met True in the hospital and immediately fell in love with him,” Ryan recounted. “It wasn’t long before we knew we needed him in our family.”
Within a few weeks, True officially became part of the Beethe family. Dr. Beethe expressed her commitment to him, saying, “He’s truly become my son. I would battle for him like anybody else. When it comes to his health, I’m a mama bear, and I fight hard.”
Uniting Siblings, Creating Extended Family
True’s story extended beyond his own adoption. His five siblings, also facing challenging circumstances, needed homes. Dr. Beethe and her husband took action, turning to people they trusted to help place the children in loving environments.

In an inspiring chain of family support, Dr. Beethe’s sister and brother-in-law adopted one sibling, while Ryan’s brother and his wife took in another. A fellow anesthesiologist from Children’s Nebraska and her husband adopted two more siblings. The Beethes also adopted one of True’s sisters, successfully creating a broad support network.
“We found a home for everyone,” Amy stated. “It’s like one big extended family.”
Thriving in New Beginnings
True is now flourishing with his new family, enjoying activities like basketball and kickball with his siblings, albeit at times needing to pause when short of breath.
“I like to go to the courts and play with my siblings,” True remarked, embodying resilience.

Doctors at the hospital, including Dr. Cole, are inspired by True’s journey. “He’s a true inspiration to us all,” Dr. Cole said. “We get strength watching him go through his battles and seeing his successes as well.”
True’s outlook remains optimistic, stating, “Just keep going and don’t stop.” His story, along with his siblings’, underlines the profound impact of compassion and the enduring power of family connections.
