School Board Candidate’s Statement Sparks Controversy Over Book Banning
During a recent forum for candidates vying for seats on the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County School Board, the discussion turned to a hot-button issue: the oversight of classroom content. Candidates were asked to outline their strategies for monitoring educational material.
Incumbent Susan Miller, who is seeking re-election in District 2, responded enthusiastically, highlighting her current role as chair of the curriculum committee. “I am in the classrooms almost every day of the week. We just banned a book,” Miller stated. “I sat on a panel. The parents made an appeal. … It was an elementary-level book.”
However, a district spokesperson later clarified that while there had been a parental appeal regarding a book, the attempt to ban it did not succeed.
Following this, Miller reached out to WFDD via email, acknowledging her error during the forum. “I apologize for the confusion … and I will speak more carefully in the future,” she said.
Miller is one of ten Republican candidates competing in District 2. The event highlighted the ongoing debate around educational oversight and the role of school board members in shaping curriculum content.
