Alamance County Primary: Key Issues and Candidates’ Tax Stances

Eight candidates compete in Alamance County Commission primary

Alamance County Prepares for Heated Board of Commissioners Primary

As Alamance County approaches its March 3 primary, voters are set to thin the ranks for the Board of Commissioners, with eight candidates in the running for four coveted positions on the November ballot.

Republican Candidates Focus on Tax Policy

Tax policy is at the forefront for Republicans as the county gears up for a property value reassessment. Among the contenders, contractor Jeff Throneburg stands out by advocating for increased tax revenue to bolster emergency services and public schools.

Current Board Chair Kelly Allen adopts a wait-and-see approach, indicating her decision will hinge on the property revaluation outcomes.

Three other GOP candidates, including sitting commissioner Steve Carter, farmer Henry Vines, and social media figure Peter Boykin, support a revenue-neutral tax strategy to counterbalance the anticipated rise in property values. Notably, Boykin has gained notoriety for his involvement in promoting conspiracy theories, such as the one surrounding the Las Vegas mass shooting in 2017.

Democratic Contenders’ Perspectives

On the Democratic side, Sean Ewing aligns with the revenue-neutral tax position, although his challengers have not publicly addressed the issue. Ewing, who serves on the Mebane City Council, underscores his commitment to public schools, infrastructure enhancements, and responsible development in his campaign.

He is opposed by Burlington pastor Ramona Allen, who prioritizes educational improvements and tackling homelessness. Allen’s campaign has faced scrutiny due to a 2004 arrest for assault and battery, which she clarifies was settled through a deferral agreement without leading to a conviction.

Rounding out the Democratic field is Warren L. Parks, Jr., who maintains a low profile, having not participated in candidate surveys or launched a campaign website.

Ultimately, the primary will determine which two candidates from each party will advance to the November general election.
