Nebraska Lawmakers Debate Medical Marijuana Bill for Patient Access

Should Nebraska doctors who recommend medical marijuana treatments be protected?

Amidst growing discussions on medical marijuana, a recent hearing in Lincoln has brought parents and advocates to the forefront of the debate. Senator Cavanaugh emphasized that medical professionals should have the freedom to recommend cannabis if they believe it is in the best interest of their patients, saying, “If doctors in their professional judgment think that this is right for their patient, they can make that recommendation without fear of retribution.”

Families from across the state are rallying in support of medical marijuana, citing its potential benefits for conditions like multiple sclerosis. According to the National Institutes of Health, cannabis can significantly alleviate pain and spasticity associated with such ailments. In particular, parents of children with epilepsy have voiced strong support at a Health and Human Services Committee hearing, arguing the bill could greatly benefit their children.

Despite some lawmakers expressing concerns over unnecessary prescriptions, Cavanaugh reassured that medical providers are unlikely to recommend cannabis without cause due to their cautious nature. Dominic Gillen, a parent advocating for the bill, shared his perspective: “This is not about politics,” he stated. “It’s about medical freedom.”

Crista Eggers, the executive director of Nebraskans for Medical Marijuana, echoed these sentiments. She believes the proposed legislation would enhance access to medical marijuana for patients in need, including her own son. “This has the ability to change our children’s lives for the better,” Eggers expressed. “That’s what I hope.”

The decision on this bill is expected in the coming weeks, leaving many hopeful for a favorable outcome.
