The dramatic rescue occurred in Springfield Park, located in the Springfield Gardens area. Alex Smith, just fourteen years old, saw the child’s perilous situation and immediately took action.
“I was like ‘oh my God, oh my God, I need to go help him,’” Smith said. “The first thing I jumped to was help him — I didn’t even call the police or nothing, I just instantly ran to help him.”
Smith’s quick thinking led him to find a safety ladder, which he pushed across the ice to the struggling child, keeping the boy’s head above water until assistance arrived.
Soon after, responders from FDNY Engine 311 and Ladder 158 were alerted when frantic children ran to their firehouse for help.
“Children came to the firehouse door, frantically banging on the door, reporting that a kid had fallen through the ice next door,” said FDNY Deputy Assistant Chief Tim Keenan.
As the firefighters arrived, probationary firefighter Shaun McMahon donned a cold-water suit and went out onto the ice. However, the mission became even riskier when the ice broke beneath him.
“About halfway out onto the ice, the ice gave way, and I went into the water,” McMahon stated.
Despite the icy plunge, McMahon maintained his focus on rescuing the child.
“It was definitely cold, but all I really had thoughts of was getting to this kid—because regardless if I was cold or not, he was even colder,” he explained.
McMahon, with the support of about a dozen firefighters, including one who secured a rope, managed to bring both himself and the child safely back to shore. Paramedics placed the boy in an ambulance and used blankets to ward off hypothermia after his prolonged exposure to the cold water.
Smith, whose intervention proved crucial, was praised for his heroic actions. He later reflected, “They told me if I hadn’t done what I did, he wouldn’t have been able to stay afloat and he would have drowned.”
