UGA Student Tragically Dies in Unusual Car Accident in Athens
The Athens-Clarke County Police Department is investigating a tragic incident that resulted in the death of a University of Georgia student. The accident, which involved a single vehicle, occurred on January 28th on Peabody Street.
Authorities reported that a parked vehicle unexpectedly began rolling backwards, striking 21-year-old George Whittenburg, who was standing outside the driver’s door. As the car continued its backward motion, it collided with an empty vehicle and a tree before it finally came to a halt.
Whittenburg, a student hailing from Austin, Texas, sustained severe injuries and was immediately transported to a nearby hospital. Sadly, he passed away on January 30th due to the injuries sustained in the accident.
This marks the first traffic-related fatality in the area for the year. The police department has urged anyone with information about the incident to contact Senior Police Officer James Trotter at 762-400-7326 as the investigation is still ongoing.
