Nebraska Prepares for Illinois After Tough Loss to Michigan

Nebraska men's basketball coach says Rienk Mast needed two IV bags Wednesday, but could play in top 10 tussle

After a narrow three-point loss to No. 3 Michigan, the Nebraska men’s basketball team faces uncertainty regarding key players’ availability for their upcoming game. Senior forward Rienk Mast’s health is a primary concern, as he missed the last game due to a stomach bug and subsequent severe dehydration.

Health Concerns for Key Players

Nebraska head coach Fred Hoiberg confirmed that Mast had to visit the emergency room due to dehydration. Hoiberg explained, “Wednesday, Rienk had to go to the ER with severe dehydration, still battling it, ended up getting home at about 2:30 in the morning after a couple bags of IV fluids.” Despite feeling better the following morning, Mast’s physical state remains a question mark for the upcoming game against No. 9 Illinois.

Hoiberg is hopeful about Mast’s potential return for Sunday’s game, stating, “If he responds well the rest of the day and has a good day tomorrow, we anticipate him being out there on Sunday, not knowing exactly what he’s gonna be able to give us.” Mast’s resilience, however, has impressed Hoiberg, who described him as a “warrior” for attempting to return so quickly after his visit to the ER.

Unexpected Returns and Team Resilience

In addition to Mast’s situation, freshman sixth man Braden Frager, who sustained an ankle injury, made an unexpectedly quick return to practice. Just eight days after the injury, Frager participated in practice drills, which Hoiberg noted as promising for the team’s depth. “He was back on the floor today for a portion of the contact drills,” Hoiberg said.

The team’s resilience has been a focal point, with junior guard Cale Jacobsen emphasizing their collective toughness. He noted, “I think that’s kind of the highlight of our group, it’s just a group that loves to play for each other and loves to compete together.”

Strategic Considerations for Illinois Matchup

As Nebraska prepares for Illinois, the team’s strategy may need to adjust, especially with the uncertainty surrounding Mast’s participation. Senior guard Jamarques Lawrence pointed out the need for adaptability, remarking on the importance of finding new ways to score in the paint.

Lawrence also highlighted the challenge of defending Illinois’ freshman standout, Keaton Wagler, who recently scored 46 points against Purdue. “He’s just been hooping,” Lawrence said, emphasizing the need for a robust defensive effort.

Upcoming Challenges and Opportunities

Looking ahead, the matchup against Illinois is critical, as both teams are tied for first place in the Big Ten. Coach Hoiberg stressed the importance of starting strong, particularly with six of their last ten games at home. “We’re going to have to come out and get off to a good start,” he stated, noting the competitive nature of the upcoming games.

The Huskers aim to capitalize on their defensive strengths, hoping to improve on their performance against Michigan. Hoiberg believes that addressing past mistakes is essential for maintaining their top position in the league.

The game against Illinois is set for Sunday at 3 p.m. CT, broadcast on Fox Sports One. As the season progresses, Nebraska remains focused on leveraging their home advantage and overcoming the challenges posed by their schedule.
