Georgia Botanical Garden Begins $5M Entrance Renovation Project

State Botanical Garden in Athens building new entrance for more visitors

State Botanical Garden of Georgia Embarks on Major Entrance Revamp

In a bid to enhance visitor experience, the State Botanical Garden of Georgia is undertaking a significant transformation of its entrance. The Gateway to the Garden initiative commenced on January 23rd, marking the start of a $5 million project set to accommodate a rapidly growing influx of visitors.

The renovation will see the main entrance relocated and expanded, alongside the addition of new parking facilities. This development comes in response to a dramatic rise in attendance; while the garden was originally designed for 50,000 visitors annually in 1968, last year it welcomed over 470,000 enthusiasts to its scenic trails and diverse garden spaces.

The updated entrance is also designed to better serve larger vehicles, such as school buses, thereby facilitating access for more than 4,000 students who visit annually for educational purposes.

The project is financed by private contributions and a $2.35 million allocation from the state. Construction is projected to be completed by late 2026, with assurances from garden officials that the process will not disrupt visitor activities.
