Severe Weather Alert: Ice Storm to Impact North Georgia

A significant ice storm is on the horizon for North Georgia, with the National Weather Service issuing warnings of potentially hazardous conditions. This storm is expected to commence on Saturday morning and persist until Monday morning, particularly affecting regions along and above I-20, with the most severe impacts forecasted for northeast Georgia.




Emergency Measures and Closures Announced

In response to the impending storm, Athens-Clarke County Manager Bob Cowell has declared a Local Emergency. Consequently, non-essential government operations will be suspended starting Saturday, January 24, at noon, lasting until Monday, January 26. Specific departmental updates include:

  • Animal Services: The Animal Shelter will not be operational from January 24 through January 26, except for emergencies accessible via 911.
  • Leisure Services: All parks and facilities will be closed during the same period.
  • Solid Waste: Services will pause at 5:00 PM on January 24, with a review of conditions set for January 26.
  • Transit: All bus services will be halted on January 25, with updates available through the MyStop app and www.accgov.com/transit.
  • Courts: Information on court operations will be disclosed by noon on January 25. Jurors should check the Jury Hotline on Monday evening for updates regarding their summons.
