Georgia Prepares for Winter Storm Fern: Ice and Extreme Cold Ahead

Georgia Residents Brace for Major Winter Storm Impact

Georgia is on high alert as state emergency officials warn of an incoming winter storm named Fern, which is set to bring severe weather conditions to the northern regions of the state. Ice accumulation is predicted to reach between one-quarter to one inch, starting Saturday afternoon and continuing through Sunday night, according to forecasts.

Josh Lamb, Director of the Georgia Emergency Management Agency (GEMA), emphasized the seriousness of the situation, stating, “Temperatures will drop below freezing Sunday evening and remain very cold all the way through Tuesday.” He further warned that prolonged freezing conditions could lead to roads refreezing and extreme cold watches or warnings being issued by Monday night and Tuesday morning.

Lamb cautioned that the freezing temperatures could potentially cause burst pipes and create hazardous travel conditions, particularly affecting the Monday morning commute. The possibility of downed trees and power lines could lead to extended power outages and debris-related issues.

Residents are encouraged to prepare by ensuring their vehicles are equipped with emergency supplies. “Before the storm hits, make sure your gas tank is full and prepare an emergency car kit including a first aid kit, cell phone charger, jumper cables, water and snacks and an ice scraper,” advised Lamb. Motorists are also urged to avoid travel during the adverse weather conditions to ensure safety and allow road crews to perform necessary maintenance.

In response to the cold snap, state parks have opened warming centers to provide shelter for those in need. For further updates and information regarding the storm, residents can visit GEMA.georgia.gov.
