The North Carolina Department of Commerce has allocated over $12 million in grants to eight local governments to bolster housing and public improvements for low- and moderate-income residents. These funds are part of the Community Development Block Grant – Neighborhood Revitalization (CDBG-NR) program, designed to support community development projects tailored to local needs. Governor Josh Stein highlighted the role of these grants in fostering stability and economic growth across the state, emphasizing the importance of affordable housing and improved public spaces.
Commerce Secretary Lee Lilley stated that the grants align with the mission to enhance economic well-being and quality of life for all residents, particularly aiding areas impacted by Hurricane Helene. This initiative underscores the state’s commitment to aiding recovery and development in affected rural communities. The CDBG-NR program, funded by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, has distributed more than $355 million in North Carolina since 2017, focusing on housing, infrastructure, and economic opportunities.
The recent funding round includes awards up to $5 million, with Avery County receiving the largest grant. Other recipients include the Towns of Bethel, Elm City, La Grange, Nashville, Sandyfield, and Wallace, along with Jackson County, each benefiting from allocations to address their specific needs. The program mandates that a minimum of 70 percent of the grant funds support activities for low- and moderate-income households, ensuring targeted assistance.
