In a dramatic move that has captured global attention, the United States carried out a significant military operation against Venezuela early Saturday, resulting in the capture and extradition of President Nicolás Maduro and his wife. This action comes after months of increasing pressure from Washington.

During a press conference on Sunday, President Donald Trump announced that the U.S. government would temporarily oversee the administration of Venezuela, a process that has already commenced.

Reactions from Wisconsin’s Congressional Delegation

Members of Wisconsin’s congressional delegation have expressed varied responses to the operation, with some raising concerns over the legality and authorization of the military action.

“After months of carrying out illegal strikes in the Caribbean and Pacific, President Trump’s unauthorized military attack on Venezuela to arrest Maduro and take control of a sovereign nation puts American troops in harm’s way with no transparency, justification, or clear path forward,” one statement read.

Critics have emphasized the necessity for congressional approval in such military engagements. “The President does not have the unilateral authority to invade foreign countries, oust their governments, and seize their resources. Under the Constitution, the power to go to war lies with the people’s branch,” they stated, urging Congress to reassert its constitutional role.

Conversely, some members have highlighted the operation’s success in capturing a key figure accused of severe crimes. “Nicolás Maduro is a narcoterrorist, indicted on drug trafficking charges. He contributed to the overdose deaths of thousands of Americans each year. He will now face justice for his crimes and the suffering he caused so many American families.”

Supporters of the operation praised President Trump’s decisive action, portraying it as a strong message to adversaries. “This operation sends a clear message to America’s adversaries: Harming U.S. citizens carries consequences,” a supporter remarked, crediting the president’s leadership for the mission’s success.

US Rep. Tony Wied, R-Green Bay

US Representative Tony Wied commended the operation’s execution, noting the absence of American casualties. “President Trump successfully extradited an indicted dictator and accused narcoterrorist without a single American casualty. A decisive operation that made clear: If you traffic deadly drugs into our country, there will be consequences. Nicolás Maduro will now face justice for his crimes.”
