Wisconsin Beneficiaries of Major Auto Finance Settlement
Wisconsin residents and the state government are set to benefit from a substantial financial settlement involving one of the leading auto finance firms in the United States. This development comes as part of a multi-state agreement announced by the Wisconsin Department of Justice on Monday.
The settlement involves Credit Acceptance Corporation (CAC), which has agreed to offer $694 million in cash and debt relief to consumers affected by their auto loans. Notably, while the settlement provides significant financial relief, CAC does not admit to any wrongdoing as part of the agreement.
For Wisconsin, the settlement translates to over $10 million in debt relief for its consumers, along with $959,988 in restitution. Additionally, the state itself will receive a payment of $218,319, as reported by the Department of Justice.
The allegations resolved by this settlement stem from claims that CAC issued loans to individuals who were unlikely to repay them, leading to defaults and repossessions. These issues were initially investigated in a multi-state probe initiated in 2020, culminating in a federal lawsuit filed by the New York Attorney General in 2023.
Apart from financial relief, the settlement mandates CAC to enhance transparency by disclosing loan risks to consumers. It also aims to bolster consumer protection measures, including preventing dealers from adding unwanted services or products to contracts, as outlined by the Wisconsin DOJ.
“People deserve to be aware of and not misled about the terms of a large purchase like a vehicle,” stated Wisconsin Attorney General Josh Kaul. “This settlement will put stronger protections in place going forward for loans from Credit Acceptance Corporation.”
Vinayak Hegde, CEO of Credit Acceptance, remarked that the settlement provides “certainty” for both the company and its customers. “We believe the provisions we agreed to are constructive, customer-focused, and consistent with the direction of regulatory expectations in our industry,” he commented. “Importantly, the resolution allows us to keep our full attention on helping consumers.”
