Legal Challenge Against EPA’s Rollback on Emissions Rules Gains Momentum
The Trump administration’s decision to ease restrictions on greenhouse gas emissions from power plants has sparked legal action from a coalition of 25 states, cities, and counties, including Wisconsin. This move follows the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) recent repeal of regulations aimed at curbing emissions from coal and gas-fired power plants, a significant source of the nation’s pollution.
Wisconsin, through its Department of Justice, has joined forces with other states to contest the EPA’s rollback in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit. The coalition has filed a petition for review challenging the EPA’s decision.
Wisconsin Attorney General Josh Kaul voiced concerns about the implications of the EPA’s decision, stating, “The Trump administration has chosen more wildfire smoke, more extreme weather, more harms to people’s health — and, of course, more in profits for the fossil fuel industry. The EPA should be protecting us from pollution, not clearing the way for it.”
The EPA justified its repeal by highlighting an expected savings of over $300 billion for the industry. However, the agency has refrained from commenting on the ongoing litigation.
