As the political landscape heats up in Wisconsin with the upcoming governorship and state Legislature elections, a significant financial disparity between the Republican and Democratic parties has emerged. The latest fundraising reports reveal that the Republicans are outpacing their Democratic counterparts by a considerable margin.
In 2026, the Republican Party of Wisconsin has significantly increased its fundraising compared to the same period in the 2022 midterm elections. From January 1 to June 30, the GOP raised approximately $6.7 million more, spent nearly $6.6 million more, and reported having $1.2 million more on hand than they did as of June 30, 2022 (source). The surge in funds is largely attributed to substantial contributions from billionaires Diane Hendricks and Richard and Elizabeth Uihlein, who collectively donated $6.5 million.
Conversely, the Democratic Party of Wisconsin has seen a decline in its fundraising efforts. Compared to the same point in the last midterm election cycle, the party’s contributions have decreased by about $4.4 million, with spending down by $3.9 million and cash reserves reduced by $2 million (source). This financial challenge comes under the new leadership of Chair Devin Remiker, following the departure of Ben Wikler, who was known for his fundraising prowess.
Republican Party of Wisconsin Chair Brian Schimming highlighted the fundraising success on social media, stating, “We have record fundraising numbers at @WisGOP, giving us one of the strongest competitive edges in years, new poll worker recruitment record with 5,300, expanding field staff reaching voters directly, assistance to local candidates. We’re unified, spending time building…not bickering.” (source)
Political expert Mordecai Lee from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee commented on the fluctuating fundraising landscape, indicating that these differences reflect the ongoing political turbulence in Wisconsin. “It’s disillusioning to us as citizens, but money is the mother’s milk of politics,” he noted.
GOP Senate and Assembly Fundraising Gains
Focusing on the Wisconsin Legislature, Republican fundraising efforts have also gained momentum in both the Senate and Assembly. The Committee to Elect a Republican Senate reported raising $4.4 million more and holding nearly $4 million more in cash compared to June 2022 (source). Meanwhile, the State Senate Democratic Committee saw an increase of $2.6 million raised and an additional $2 million in cash reserves.
In the Assembly, the Republican Assembly Campaign Committee, under the leadership of Robin Vos, raised $5.3 million more and had $8.5 million additional cash in 2026 compared to 2022. Major contributions came from Diane Hendricks and Liz Uihlein, with donations totaling $5.5 million. In contrast, the Assembly Democratic Campaign Committee’s improvements were modest, raising $2.6 million more and having $1.8 million additional cash.
Lee anticipates that the financial gap between the parties may narrow as the gubernatorial race progresses, predicting that by November, spending levels could become more balanced.
