Waukesha County is mourning the loss of its long-serving executive, Paul Farrow, who passed away at the age of 61 after battling cancer. Farrow, known for his dedication to public service and his deep commitment to the community, had been an influential figure in Wisconsin politics.
Having first been elected in 2015, Farrow successfully retained his position in subsequent elections in 2019 and 2023. In a heartfelt statement, County Board Chair Jim Heinrich expressed his sorrow, describing Farrow as “a devoted public servant, a steady leader, and a proud champion for Waukesha County.”
Farrow’s political career was deeply rooted in his family’s legacy, with his mother, Margaret Farrow, having also served in various political roles, including as Wisconsin’s lieutenant governor. Paul’s own journey in politics saw him elected to the state Assembly in 2010 and later to the state Senate in 2012. He further contributed to his party by leading the Republican Party of Wisconsin as its chair between 2021 and 2022.
Brian Schimming, the current GOP Chair, shared his memories with WPR, stating, “Paul was the type of guy who’d give you the shirt off his back until he was out of shirts. We’re enormously sad about it.”
Farrow’s health battle began with a rare form of cancer called mucinous adenocarcinoma, which he spoke about openly in 2024. In an interview with WISN-TV, he mentioned that he initially dismissed abdominal pain until it intensified. Farrow remarked, “If I had listened to my body sooner, we could’ve attacked differently.” He saw it as his “public responsibility” to raise awareness about the condition.
The announcement of his passing led to a wave of condolences from political figures across the spectrum. Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley, who knew Farrow from his legislative staffer days, reflected on their relationship, noting, “He always picked up the phone, and he always showed up… We didn’t always see eye to eye politically, but we shared a deep belief that our counties are stronger when we work together.”

On social media, former Gov. Scott Walker expressed his admiration for Farrow, stating, “Paul Farrow was a great man. He was filled with joy and always seemed to have a big smile on his face.”
In accordance with state law, Jim Heinrich will temporarily assume the role of acting county executive. The Waukesha County Board is expected to confirm an interim executive within 30 days, leading to a special election to fill the remainder of Farrow’s term.
