Telemann’s Mastery Showcased in New Classical Album
Renowned for his extensive repertoire, Georg Philipp Telemann remains a towering figure in the German Baroque era with over 3,000 known compositions. Among his prolific output are more than 125 concertos, a selection of which are highlighted in this week’s featured classical album.
Esteemed German violinist Isabelle Faust collaborates with the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin, a celebrated ensemble known for their performances on authentic 18th-century instruments. This album showcases two vibrant violin concertos by Telemann, one famously mimicking the sound of croaking frogs, along with a dance suite and additional pieces that highlight the violin’s versatility.
Telemann was celebrated for his innovative instrumental combinations, a feature that this album captures well. It includes performances by trumpeter Ute Hartwich in a concerto crafted for trumpet, violin, and strings. Moreover, violinist Bernhard Forck contributes to a suite for two violins inspired by the whimsical world of Jonathan Swift’s “Gulliver’s Travels.”
Listeners can explore this rich tapestry of Telemann’s work now available on the harmonia mundi label.
