Lawmakers Demand Legal Action
Democratic Representatives Amaad Rivera-Wagner and Lee Snodgrass have called on the Brown County District Attorney to pursue charges against Musk. The call to action follows a commission vote, which concluded that Musk likely breached election laws with a social media post pledging $1 million to voters in the 2025 state Supreme Court election.
The Controversial Town Hall
In March 2025, Musk held a town hall in Green Bay, drawing attention when he distributed two $1 million checks. Protestors, braving freezing rain, accused Musk of attempting to “buy” the election. Lee Snodgrass stated, “These blatant attempts were vote-buying schemes, and findings of the bipartisan Wisconsin Elections Commission make it clear that the time to act on charges is now.”
Pending Legal Decisions
The Wisconsin Elections Commission has forwarded two complaints to the Brown County District Attorney, David Lasee, who has 40 days to decide on potential charges. Musk is also confronting a civil lawsuit from the Wisconsin Democracy Campaign, a group dedicated to monitoring campaign finance.
Requests for comments from both the district attorney’s office and Musk’s legal representatives have gone unanswered.
Press Conference Insights
Kristin Lyerly, a former congressional candidate, emphasized, “The commission did their job. Now it’s time for District Attorney Lasee to do his.” She highlighted the importance of applying the law equally, regardless of wealth.
Community organizer Christina Thor echoed the sentiment, referencing an April 2024 incident where local organizers were warned about potential legal violations in their voter turnout efforts. “Our community deserves to see that same standard applied today,” Thor asserted.
Complaint Initiated by Rachel Maes
Rachel Maes, assistant city attorney and community prosecutor for Green Bay, initiated one of the complaints against Musk. Emphasizing her commitment to “equal justice,” Maes stated her intention was to affirm that “our votes aren’t for sale.”
Since then, Maes has joined the Brown County Board, maintaining her stance that similar cases should be treated similarly and that “nobody is above the law.”

Rivera-Wagner, speaking after the press conference, criticized Musk’s actions as “brazen” and indicative of larger issues with money in politics. He remarked, “No one should be able to take a shortcut… watching someone try to use their money to buy our election should not only be illegal, it should be unacceptable.”
