Wisconsin Biohealth Named Tech Hub to Boost Personalized Medicine

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Cristina Killingsworth, the Acting Assistant Secretary for Economic Development at the Economic Development Administration (EDA) of the U.S. Department of Commerce, recently visited the Wisconsin Biohealth Tech Hub. This visit follows the designation of Wisconsin Biohealth as a Tech Hub by the Biden-Harris Administration in October 2023. The hub is led by BioForward Wisconsin and showcases the region’s burgeoning role in the field of personalized medicine.

During the visit, Ms. Killingsworth, along with leadership from the Tech Hubs Program, engaged with the Wisconsin Biohealth Tech Hub to refine strategies aimed at fostering innovation and production in personalized medicine. Key aspects of this strategy include expediting the biohealth product lifecycle, deploying mobile cancer screening units in underserved communities, enhancing clinical integration of cutting-edge technologies, and developing diverse talent pipelines.

The Tech Hubs Program is a central initiative focused on enhancing U.S. dominance in critical technologies and industries, which are essential for national security. The designation of Wisconsin Biohealth as a Tech Hub highlights the region’s potential to become a major player in the global personalized medicine sector, thus contributing to the United States’ national security and international competitiveness.

Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo commented, “Wisconsin Biohealth Tech Hub embodies the spirit and potential of the Tech Hubs Program to take centers of excellence and make them world-class tech ecosystems through targeted investments.” She emphasized the importance of Cristina Killingsworth’s visit to provide strategic guidance. The Secretary further underscored the significance of the Tech Hubs Program in maintaining and boosting tech industries that are vital for the U.S. economy and security, expressing commitment to future funding and collaboration with lawmakers to secure additional federal support.

The Tech Hubs Program, which has been allocated $10 billion through the bipartisan CHIPS and Science Act, seeks to enhance America’s capabilities in creating and deploying new technologies, thereby fostering the growth of innovative companies and generating quality employment opportunities.
