Birth of Rare White Bison Calf in Yellowstone National Park Brings Hope
Exciting news emerges from the wildlife-rich Yellowstone National Park as a rare white bison calf is born. The birth of this exceptional creature was lucky to be witnessed by Erin Braaten, a frequent park visitor and renowned wildlife photographer, in Yellowstone’s Lamar Valley.
Residing in Kalispell, Montana, Braaten often visits Yellowstone. However, witnessing this rare and symbolic event was beyond her imagination. Managing to maintain a safe distance, she captured some breathtaking photos of the white bison calf and its mother.
Notably, Erin, who has Native American heritage, elaborated on the profound symbolism surrounding the birth of a white bison calf. “It’s a great blessing. It’s a good omen. It means there could be a good change coming,” she expressed.
In Native American culture, especially among the Lakota, the birth of a white bison calf holds a deep spiritual significance. According to the Lakota legends, its birth is seen as a prophetic sign promising better times ahead. The legend dates back to around 2,000 years ago when food was scarce, and the bison population was dwindling. During these hardships, the White Buffalo Calf Woman was said to have appeared, passing a sacred pipe and a bundle to a tribal member and teaching them to pray and bring back the bison for their survival. As she left, she morphed into a white buffalo calf.
Chief Arvol Looking Horse, the spiritual leader of the Lakota, Dakota, and Nakota Oyate in South Dakota, and the 19th keeper of the sacred White Buffalo Calf Woman Pipe and Bundle, has often reiterated this legend’s significance. “And someday when times are hard again, I shall return and stand upon the earth as a white buffalo calf, black nose, black eyes, black hooves,” he once stated.
