Republican Victor Marx’s Controversial Stance on Abortion Rights
Victor Marx, the Republican gubernatorial candidate in Colorado, has gained attention for his controversial remarks concerning abortion rights. Known for his uncompromising stance, Marx supports a total abortion ban without exceptions for cases of rape, incest, or threats to the mother’s life.
Marx, who has been a pastor since 2003, has a long history of association with anti-abortion organizations. His views sharply contrast with Colorado’s current policies, where no restrictions exist on when a pregnancy can be terminated. This policy has made Colorado a destination for women from states with stricter abortion laws. In 2024, 62% of voters in Colorado chose to constitutionally protect reproductive rights.
In August, Marx made headlines with a Facebook post labeling abortion as part of “occultic activities” being “practiced openly” in Colorado. He expressed his strong opposition by stating, “This state, they kill babies. Wholesale slaughter. A girl teenager can drive in our state, get an abortion, you have to pay for it. She can drive back over that line and get to her parents and never know. Our state needs to repent.”
George Markert, Marx’s running mate, also expressed disapproval of the state’s constitutional amendment on reproductive rights. During an interview with FOX31 in Denver, Markert pledged to seek its rescission if elected as lieutenant governor.
Marx frequently frames the issue of abortion in religious terms. In a 2022 interview with the now-deceased podcaster Charlie Kirk, he referred to abortion as “evil” and a “manifestation of darkness.” Further expressing his views, he described the abortion rate among Black individuals as a “self-inflicted genocide” and accused them of using it as a “horrific form of birth control” on his podcast in 2023.
Regarding the impact of abortion on women, Marx argued in a 2023 interview with Rumble that it has contributed to the rise of “angry women,” suggesting, “When you kill your own child, you know, your soul knows it, your body knows it. And say what you want, it wounds you.”
Marx’s background includes a stint as an assistant to James Dobson, the founder of Focus on the Family, a group known for opposing abortion rights and labeling LGBTQ rights as “Satanic.” The Southern Poverty Law Center has designated Focus on the Family as a hate group.
In response to Marx’s candidacy, Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains, along with Cobalt and COLOR, condemned his views. Claudia Pérez, the organization’s Director of Public Affairs, stated, “He has repeatedly used language designed to dehumanize, shame, and stigmatize people seeking care. He is part of a movement that believes government should have the power to override deeply personal medical decisions.”
Marx faces opposition from Democratic candidate Phil Weiser, Colorado’s Attorney General, who has committed to defending reproductive rights if elected.
