Mike Lawler Criticized for Lavish Campaign Spending on Travel and Hotels

Representative Mike Lawler’s Campaign Spending Under Scrutiny

New York Representative Mike Lawler continues to face questions about his campaign spending practices following revelations from a Daily Mail report. The report, backed by Federal Elections Commission (FEC) filings, detailed expenditures exceeding $150,000 on luxurious accommodations, including $11,000 on chauffeurs and a $700 stay at a Florida beachfront Ritz-Carlton last year.

While lawmakers are permitted to allocate campaign funds for travel, such spending must adhere to the criteria of being reasonable and necessary. Lawler’s latest FEC filings indicate a continued pattern in 2026, with his campaign reporting over $4,800 spent in January on a West Palm Beach trip. This includes $3,511 for limousine services and $1,355 at a Hilton hotel.

It’s noteworthy that West Palm Beach offers a city-run, complimentary car service akin to Uber. In the same month, Lawler’s campaign also expended over $600 at a Jefferson Valley, NY pizza restaurant, marked as “fundraiser expenses.”

In March, Lawler returned to Florida for a fundraiser at Longboat Key’s St. Regis Hotel, with campaign records showing $807 spent on car services. Notably, Longboat Key, in Sarasota County, provides a community car service charging between $3 and $6 per ride.

Lawler’s spending habits could potentially distance him from voters grappling with the economic impacts of the war in Iran and former President Donald Trump’s tariff policies. This scenario coincides with a surge in gas prices, elevating inflation to its peak in two years.

As Lawler campaigns for a third House term, he is perceived as one of the more vulnerable Republican incumbents facing reelection.
