Jim Desmond’s Congressional Campaign Draws Attention for Association with Controversial Mayor

Republican congressional candidate Jim Desmond has garnered attention due to his association with Temecula Mayor Jessica Alexander, known for her provocative comments comparing COVID-19 mask mandates to racial segregation and implying inclusion of pedophiles within the LGBTQ community.

In a Facebook post dated July 12, Desmond expressed gratitude to Mayor Alexander for her participation in a campaign door-knocking event, acknowledging her leadership and dedication to the community.

Jessica Alexander, during her tenure on the Temecula City Council in 2021, sparked controversy by equating her defiance against wearing face masks to civil rights icon Rosa Parks’ historic stand against racial discrimination.

In that council meeting, Alexander stated, “[Parks] finally took a stand and moved to the front. I’m getting pushed to the back of the bus. I’m telling you, I feel like I’m getting pushed to the back of the bus!” Her remarks quickly gained widespread attention and criticism, leading to public outcry and demands for her resignation.

The controversy continued this year when Alexander voiced strong objections during a council meeting to a proclamation celebrating June as LGBTQ pride month. She suggested, “We will eventually see MAPS [Minor Attracted Persons] be recognized under this flag,” and controversially claimed the extended acronym LGBTQ+ could potentially include pedophiles and individuals involved in bestiality.

In Temecula, the position of mayor is not filled through a public election but rather by a vote among city council members, with Alexander’s current term concluding on January 1, 2027.

Jim Desmond is vying for an open seat in the 48th District against Democratic candidate Marni von Wilpert, a San Diego City Council member.
