Ashley Hinson Skips Key Votes for Senate Fundraising with Capito

Hinson missed key House votes while fundraising for Senate campaign

Hinson’s Fundraising Priorities Lead to Missed House Votes

Iowa Representative Ashley Hinson recently faced scrutiny after missing several critical votes in the House due to campaign fundraising activities for her Senate run. On June 24, the House Appropriations Committee conducted votes on 11 amendments related to the 2027 Defense Appropriations bill. This bill plays a crucial role in determining the funding for the Pentagon and associated defense programs for the upcoming fiscal year. Hinson, who is a member of the committee, was absent for seven of these votes.

According to Grand Valley Consulting, a firm that provides advisory services to Republican candidates, Hinson had a fundraising lunch with West Virginia Senator Shelly Moore Capito on the same day. The event offered tickets priced between $1,000 and $2,500.

A progressive media outlet, MidasTouch, shared a video showing Hinson entering the event while the House votes were taking place.

The votes Hinson missed addressed significant national security issues, including fiscal allocations within the Defense Department, the proposed reduction of U.S. military forces stationed in Europe, and adjustments to criteria for military officer promotions.

Criticism towards Hinson has intensified, with accusations that she has prioritized her Senate campaign over her responsibilities as a congressperson. Notably, she has failed to conduct any town hall meetings with her constituents this year, despite holding numerous campaign-focused events.

Hinson is vying for the Senate seat soon to be vacated by retiring Republican Senator Joni Ernst. Her opponent in the upcoming general election is Democratic state Representative Josh Turek.

A recent poll conducted by The New York Times and Siena University indicates Hinson holds a narrow 2-point lead over Turek, highlighting the competitive nature of the race.
