The annual event highlighting the challenges and triumphs of women and young girls involved in the justice system will be taking place in New York City this week. The 5th Annual WE Nation Reentry Summit is set to open its doors in Harlem, inviting people of all races and genders to participate in this transformative event.

The summit is not only a platform to raise awareness about the experiences of justice-impacted women but also an opportunity to drive their economic development. It focuses on providing women with the tools and support necessary to overcome hurdles, learn valuable job skills and build sustainable careers.

This year’s summit will host numerous workshops led by community industry experts. These sessions are crafted to benefit individuals who have experienced the justice system, with workshops focusing on financial literacy, resume writing and job skill training among others.

The event also offers an avenue for networking with justice-impacted women, industry leaders, and community members. Visitors can explore informational booths hosted by local businesses and organizations, fostering a sense of community and collaboration. Attendees also stand a chance to win a variety of giveaways, including beauty products and cash prizes.

The WE Nation Reentry Summit is the result of a collaboration between Activate Your Life, a nonprofit focused on supporting women of color involved in the criminal justice system, and The Ladies of Hope Ministries (The LOHM), which advocates for the rights of women and girls impacted by the justice system.

The event is scheduled to start at 10:30 a.m. and conclude at 4 p.m. at the Harlem School of the Arts at 645 St Nicholas Avenue.

The summit also brings to light the increasing criminalization of African American girls. Studies reveal that early involvement with the criminal justice system can lead to severe life consequences, negatively impacting employment prospects and earning potential, thereby contributing to the widening racial wealth gap.

As per author Monique Morris, Black girls constitute 16% of school students in the U.S, yet they account for over 33% of school arrests. In her book ‘Pushout: The Criminalization of Black Girls in Schools’, Morris contends that it is not only jail or prison experiences that impact Black girls but also other forms of confinement and carceral experiences, such as detention centers, house arrest, electronic monitoring, and social exclusion.
