Representative Lori Chavez-DeRemer’s Campaign Expenditures Under Scrutiny
Republican Representative Lori Chavez-DeRemer has attracted attention due to significant campaign spending on upscale accommodations and transportation services. She has previously been under scrutiny for residing outside the district she serves.
Chavez-DeRemer, elected in 2022 to represent Oregon’s 5th district, is currently seeking re-election. Campaign finance records reveal nearly $50,000 was spent on luxury hotel stays and car services.
From February 2023 to May 2024, Chavez-DeRemer’s campaign allocated $43,800 across 30 hotels, all rated four to five stars. A substantial portion of this spending occurred at Marriott properties in Washington D.C. Additional stays included The Ritz-Carlton in Miami and the Phoenician Resort in Scottsdale. Specifics on some hotel locations were not disclosed.
The campaign also incurred $6,090 in expenses on private car and limousine services between December 2023 and May 2024, primarily around Washington D.C. This includes a $731.50 charge at Snow Country Limousine in Park City, Utah, coinciding with a stay at the St. Regis Resort, known for its luxury ski packages and fine dining.
Campaign finance regulations permit spending on travel, meals, and events, provided these are deemed reasonable and necessary. Chavez-DeRemer’s financial disclosures report a net worth of $14.8 million. She and her husband, an anesthesiologist, reside in Happy Valley, Oregon.
Though she campaigned from outside District 5, Chavez-DeRemer’s address in the U.S. House of Representatives’ representative tool shows her living in District 3, led by Democratic Rep. Earl Blumenauer. Despite initial commitments to move, she later expressed no intention of relocating to District 5. Oregon law does not mandate that representatives reside within their districts.
In the upcoming election, Chavez-DeRemer faces Democratic contender State Rep. Janelle Bynum. Requests for comments from Chavez-DeRemer’s campaign were not returned.
