Returning from World War II, Gene Passarella didn’t just settle back into civilian life; he brought the gift of music to Northeast Pennsylvania for seventy remarkable years. His influence as a musician continued until his passing, just days before marking his 101st year.
Passarella was the driving force behind the Gene Dempsey Orchestra. His story gained widespread attention when WVIA News featured him in 2024, followed by a NPR broadcast on Veteran’s Day, showcasing his life and musical journey.
The local community and his orchestra marked Passarella’s centennial milestone with a grand celebration at Nay Aug Park last summer. Photos from the event captured the joyous atmosphere and Passarella’s enduring passion for music.
His final days were spent at the Gino J. Merli Veterans Center, where he resided since the previous year. Passarella’s legacy is cherished by his wife of nearly 74 years, Louise Colangelo, along with his daughter Cathy Van Nort and two grandsons.
Arrangements for Passarella’s funeral services have been made for Friday at 11 a.m. at St. Patrick’s Church, located at 1403 Jackson St., Scranton. Following the service, he will be laid to rest with Military Honors at Cathedral Cemetery.
