Wilkes-Barre Resident Admits to Flag Theft from Courthouse Display
In a recent development, a man from Wilkes-Barre has admitted guilt concerning the theft of flags from a display at the Luzerne County Courthouse. The incident, which occurred last month, has drawn significant attention.
John Jackson, aged 58, entered a guilty plea on Wednesday morning at Luzerne County Central Court. This was confirmed by District Attorney Sam Sanguedolce through a news release.
The case began on August 22 when the Luzerne County Sheriff’s Department was alerted about a missing flag from a patriotic arrangement on the courthouse lawn in Wilkes-Barre.
“Luzerne County Detectives along with members of the Wilkes-Barre City Police Department conducted an investigation and identified John Jackson as the individual who stole the flag from the display,” stated the release from Sanguedolce.
Jackson faced charges for misdemeanor theft, with the severity of the charges reflecting the flag’s value, as explained by Sanguedolce. The court records indicate that Jackson was fined $790 in penalties and legal costs after pleading guilty to a single count.
Sanguedolce also noted, “Based on his prior record and the offense the guidelines in this case did not call for incarceration.”
The flags were part of a larger patriotic display that celebrated both the nation’s 250th anniversary and Luzerne County’s 240th anniversary. Luzerne County Manager Romilda Crocamo described the arrangement as resembling the United States’ outline, with a county flag marking Luzerne County’s location.
Surveillance footage provided a crucial lead, capturing an individual on a bicycle approaching the display on the afternoon of August 22, as revealed by county-released emails. Crocamo previously mentioned that both U.S. flags and the county flag were removed during the incident.
