Republican Leaders Gather in Dallas for Unprecedented Midterm Convention
This week, Dallas becomes the epicenter of political activity as Republican leaders convene for a unique midterm convention. U.S. Sen. Dave McCormick and several GOP congress members, including Rep. Rob Bresnahan of Luzerne County, will address attendees. Meanwhile, Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick of Bucks County has opted out, maintaining his stance as an independent-minded conservative.
Fitzpatrick, known for his moderate positions, shared with WHYY News, “I’m ranked No. 1, most independent on every scorecard, every single metric.” This stance has occasionally put him at odds with President Trump, further complicating his position as one of the more vulnerable Republicans in the House.
Mackenzie and Bresnahan’s Participation
Despite the risks associated with aligning closely with President Trump, Pennsylvania Republicans like Reps. Ryan Mackenzie and Rob Bresnahan have embraced their roles as speakers at the Dallas event. U.S. Rep. Scott Perry from Harrisburg will also be in attendance, undeterred by potential electoral vulnerabilities.
WHEN THEY’RE SPEAKING
Republican officials on Tuesday announced the speakers’ schedule for this week’s midterm convention, including the following Pennsylvania lawmakers:
● Bresnahan: 9/9, during the 6-7 p.m. ET hour
● McCormick: 9/9, during the 7-8 p.m. ET hour
● Mackenzie: 9/10, during the 4–5 p.m. ET hour
In his statement, Mackenzie emphasized his achievements for the Lehigh Valley and the Poconos, highlighting over $160 million directed to community projects. “It has also meant tax relief for seniors, parents, workers, and every American,” Mackenzie stated. The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee’s Eli Cousin criticized Mackenzie for his alignment with Trump, arguing it could impact his reelection bid.
Rep. Dan Meuser from Luzerne County is also expected to attend, as reported by Axios. However, the plans of other Pennsylvania Republicans remain uncertain.
State Treasurer Stacy Garrity will not be present due to “campaign and Treasury obligations,” according to her campaign.
GOP’s Inaugural Midterm-Centric Convention
This event, hosted at the American Airlines Center, marks the Republican Party’s inaugural midterm-focused national convention. President Trump, who spearheaded the event’s creation, will speak on both nights, alongside Vice President JD Vance and other officials. The gathering aims to rally Republican voters and spotlight congressional candidates ahead of the elections.
With an anticipated attendance of 30,000, the event is estimated to cost over $40 million, reports Reuters. According to Axios, Rep. Meuser paid $25,000 for his convention package, which includes access to special events. Meanwhile, vulnerable lawmakers benefit from the NRCC’s “Patriot” program, exempting them from costs. Yet, attending the convention may come at the expense of time in their districts at a pivotal campaign moment.
Democratic Response and Counter-Event
In response to the GOP’s gathering, Democrats have planned a counter-event in Dallas, featuring Rep. Madeleine Dean among others. Dean criticized the Republican agenda, accusing them of exacerbating economic hardships. “I hear from Pennsylvanians every day — they want an end to the GOP’s reckless tariffs, the disastrous war with Iran, and to the disgusting corruption that they’ve enabled,” Dean stated.
