The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) is making strides to alleviate a critical issue for truck drivers by expanding parking spaces across the state. With an expanding trucking industry and a pressing need for safe parking, PennDOT’s initiative aims to significantly enhance road safety.

“Starting this week, PennDOT is adding over 1,200 truck parking spaces at 133 Commonwealth owned locations,” announced PennDOT Secretary Mike Carroll. Carroll delivered this news from a newly designated truck parking area in Bellwood, adjacent to Interstate 99’s on-ramp.

Highlighting the broader context, Carroll stated, “There are not enough safe parking options for trucks, truck drivers carrying freight. Truck parking is a nationwide problem.”

For the first time in several decades, PennDOT is directly tackling the truck parking challenge. Carroll emphasized that fatigued drivers pose a higher risk on the roads, often resorting to unsafe stops due to a lack of suitable parking.

“By adding these spots and looking to ways to add more, we’re giving truckers many more options to safely park and to meet their rest requirements,” Carroll noted. PennDOT plans to continue these efforts through the end of the next year.

Carroll pointed out that the financial burden of establishing these 133 parking areas is minimal, as the process involves adding signage and reassigning existing state-owned land. The Bellwood site, for example, was previously a storage area owned by PennDOT.

Truck drivers can locate these parking areas via the 511pa.com website and its mobile application. Additionally, the Pennsylvania Turnpike is set to introduce approximately 600 more truck parking spaces.
